Advanced Sea Kayaking Courses

Tune up your sea kayaking to a higher level. Or, join us on a multi-day sea kayak exploration around the fantastic coastline of Jersey. With our expert local staff (who contributed the Channel Island Sea Kayaking Guidebook) we’ll get you exploring in some great locations around Jersey.

Jersey Kayak Trail

Jersey’s dramatic coastline of cliffs, caves, and secluded bays enables sea kayakers of all abilities to develop their skills and explore. Add a 12m tidal range and you can paddle over places that within a few hours will be dry land.

For the more experienced – or those wanting expert coaching – paddle tide races or offshore to Les Écréhous.

Many paddlers find this 5-day course a great way to tune up their skills in a superb kayaking location.  All equipment (including ladies/gents wetsuits) is supplied. Drysuits can also be hired.

Expect to kayak for between 5-6 hours per day so some previous kayaking experience is advised.

Sea Kayak Leader (4-star)Award

The British Canoeing (BC) Sea Kayak Leader (4 star) is an essential requirement for sea kayakers who want to lead or guide groups. The award is also a great way to get more experience.

Our courses cover the essential elements (and more) of the BC Sea Kayak Leader (4-star) syllabus in some great tidal waters around Jersey where nowhere is more than a 20 minute drive away.

Sea Kayak Leader (4 star) training is usually 2 days duration. However, you can add extra paddling days so you have more time to develop your paddle skills and experience.

We are used to working with European and international clients. We have French and German speaking staff and can assist with the translation of your certificates etc. into English.

Beat the long drives and motorway queues. Fly from regional airports (Easyjet, BA, Flybe operate regular services all year) to make the most of your time on Jersey or bring your own kayak and travel by high speed car ferry.

Our prices include kayaks and kit. We have sea kayaks from: Valley sea kayaks – Norkapps, Avocets, Aquanaut, P&H Delphin, Esky and Hammer. New for 2017 performance sea kayaks: Rockpool Taran and Tiderace Pace 17’s and Epic V5 and V7 Surskis. Plus, a selection of Greenland and Werner paddles. All students will receive a Paddlers Performance Action Plan.

Sea Kayak Leader (4 star) Training

Level: Suitable for the improving sea paddler who is already around 3 star standard and wants to consolidate his/her skills and knowledge. Download the BC syllabus.

Even if you have no plans to complete the Sea Kayak Leader (4-star) assessment, this course is a great way to develop your experience. Expect to kayak in a variety of conditions as you explore the superb coastline of Jersey and tune up your skills.

Sea Kayak Leader (4 star) Assessment

Level: You must have completed a Sea Kayak Leader (4 star) training and hold the required prerequisites. A Leadership Registration*** (LR form) must be submitted in advance.

This two day assessment requires a minimum of two examiners (Derek Hairon and  Phil Hadley or Kevin Mansell). Expect to lead ‘real’ adult students on at least one of the days.

Please read the assessment syllabus  to ensure you have the prerequisites.

Sea Kayaks and paddle kit can be supplied at no extra charge*. Visiting paddlers can also hire Flares/Laser Flares, VHF marine radio, if requested in advance. On the assessment you should supply your own first aid, kayak repair kit and tow line.

Advanced Sea kayak Leader (5 star) Training

Level; This course is intended for sea kayakers who paddle or lead/guide trips in areas where tide races, headlands, open crossings, swell and challenging coastlines will be encountered.

Holders of the Advanced sea kayak leader (5-Star) award have successfully demonstrated a high level of performance, involving personal skills, leadership ability and good judgment to lead groups of paddlers with a range of experience on advanced tidal waters.

Course Content

As a rough guide a committed and active club paddler, who regularly sea kayaks in various sea conditions and areas should be able to obtain this award in around 3 years.

Advanced sea kayak leader training involves at least 2 days of training in personal skills, leadership, safety and rescue (including night paddle/s).

Read the British Canoeing Advanced Sea Kayak Leader (5-star) syllabus to ensure you have the prerequisites to undertake this course. Currently, the prerequisites are; Sea Kayak Leader (4-Star), 16-hour first aid and Open Water Navigation.

Add the British Canoeing Open Water Navigation course as an extra days training.

Open Water Navigation

The content of this course builds on the themes covered in the Coastal and Tidal Planning training and seeks to develop your knowledge and understanding in an advanced water environment:

  • Interpret sources of relevant information including maps, charts, coastal pilots, tide tables and tidal stream atlases
  • Calculate vectors when negotiating open crossings and/or coastlines with no landing zones and/or tide races and overfalls
  • Develop the necessary knowledge to navigate on the water using advanced pilotage techniques in poor visibility or hours of darkness

The course meets the requirements of the British Canoeing (BCU) Open Water Navigation & Tidal Planning training syllabus. This is a prerequisite for the British Canoeing Advanced Sea Kayak (training) course.

Sea Kayak Navigation. Putting Theory into Practice

Level: To get the most from this course you should have some sea kayaking experience. Suitable for sea kayakers who want to develop their on the water coastal navigation skills or tune up their existing knowledge and techniques through practical on the water based scenarios.

Join us on two days of practical sea kayak navigation to turn theory into reality around the scenic coastline of Jersey.

Day one covers the British Canoeing (BC/BCU) Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course. We’ll then move onto the sea to apply your sea kayak navigation skills with a selection of on the water challenges. Develop your map/chart reading skills and navigation techniques. Practice using transits, assessing speed and drift, allowing for tide streams and cross tides as well as micro navigation and perhaps paddling in low light/darkness.

Sea kayaks and essential navigation equipment can be supplied at no extra charge.

Moderate Water Endorsement (sea) Assessment

We have teamed up with Phil Hadley, a very experienced British Canoeing coach assessor, to run Moderate Water (Sea) assessments in Jersey.

Holders of this award have successfully demonstrated they can plan, deliver and review a series of progressive paddlesport coaching sessions in a moderate water environment.

Fly from UK and European airports to get more time on the water. Sea kayaks and all equipment can be supplied.

We can supply students for your assessment (at no extra charge) and can usually arrange for you to meet (and sometimes paddle) with them before your assessment.

Sea Kayak Guide Training

Level: If you would like to develop a career in the outdoors, or develop your sea kayak skills, our training programme could provide the ideal launch pad. our courses care usually custom made for a reasonable cost so you get to spend your money (and time) in the most effective way. 

Previous students have undertaken training from BC 1 to 3 star sea kayak awards and the sea kayak leader and advanced leader awards (4 and 5 star) as well as the Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT), VHF, First Aid and Child Protection training as part of their pathway to become a BC level 1 and 2 kayak coach.

Group sizes are small so you get lots of input and support. Some courses will operate on a 1:1 level. Previous students have attended from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Mauritius and the UK.

Contact Derek to discuss longer sea kayak development and training options. This option is available year round.

All equipment can be supplied along with various accommodation options.

*Any loaned or hired equipment used on the assessment will be assessed as if it were your own, so ensure you know how it works.

**If you combine a training course with an assessment course, it is important to understand that attendance on a training course does not imply that you will have reached the required standard to pass the award at the end of the course. Much depends upon your level of paddle skills and experience. Ensure you have read and understand the syllabus for the relevant awards.

If you are considering undertaking Sea Kayak Leader (4 star) training and assessment by linking both courses together, please discuss this in advance.

***Leadership Registration (LR) Form. A copy of your completed and officially stamped LR form is required when you book/pay (no later than 3 days before the assessment).
