Kayak safety training for sit in and sit on top kayakers

Our 5 hour basic kayak safety class covers a range of skills to enable you to paddle with greater confidence and know your limits.
Maybe you have just bought a kayak or realise you need practice and training in kayak safety.

This short and intensive class covers those essential safety skills, we all mean to practice, but never quite get around to doing!

Kayak fishing,anchoring and specific safety skills relating to fishing from a Sit-on-top kayak can be covered if required.
Paddle skills are covered in more detail on our level 1 and 2 courses.

Course Content:

Capsizing. Self rescue techniques. Assisted rescues. Ways to avoid falling in. Personal safety gear. Safety kit. Using paddle floats. Towing. Float and trip planning.

Navigation- an essential skill when sea kayaking

Learn trip planning and sea kayak navigation skills to enable you to make the right choices.

This course is suitable for kayakers, divers and small boat users, or anyone, who wants to understand more about the tides and coastal navigation around Jersey.

Plan and navigate effectively on coastal journeys. The course includes weather, tides, chart work, trip planning and estimating tide streams, so you know how to select the best times and places to go afloat.

By the end of the course students will have planned at least two coastal journeys that they can take home and use as references for further trip planning.

The course meets the requirements of the British Canoe Union (BCU) coastal navigation and tidal planning syllabus. This course is a pre-requisite for anyone wanting to obtain the BCU 4 star leader sea kayak award.

All course equipment is supplied. The fee includes the course manual. If you require the certificate add £5 for BCU members or £10 non members.

A BCU certificate of attendance is awarded. This course (or a similar RYA navigation course) is a pre-requisite for the BCU 4 star sea kayak assessment.

Sea Kayak Navigation. Putting Theory into Practice

On the water navigation exercises

Join us on a weekend of practical sea kayak navigation making theory become reality around the scenic coastline of Jersey.

Based on the BCU Coastal Navigation and Tidal Planning course the weekend moves from the classroom onto the sea to apply your sea kayak navigation skills to a selection of on the water challenges.

Having planned trips ashore we go afloat to paddle some of the best sections of Jersey’s coastline. This will enable you to develop your practical map/chart reading skills and navigation techniques. Practice using transits, assessing speed and drift, allowing for tide streams and cross tides as well as micro navigation and even paddling in low light/darkness.

To get the most from this course you should have some sea kayaking experience. This course is suitable for paddlers who want to develop their on the water coastal navigation skills in order to undertake coastal trips or tune up their existing knowledge and techniques through practical on the water based scenarios.

Essential safety, rescue skills and training to deal with common paddlesport emergencies.

This award is essential for anyone wishing to become a BCU/UKCC level 1 coach.

Expect to get wet. Dry suits can be hired for £10 per day.
